Dell inspiron 5520

Asked by Abdo Refky

hi . i have bought my laptop with ubuntu 11.10 preloaded on it .
i have dell utility partition and OS partition and ext4 partition . the OS partition is 3GB , used 1.5 GB from it
the normal ubuntu 11.10 is 700 MB , so what is all that space ? (1)

i had some issue with intel hd graphics 4000 . looks like it was OpenGL problem , but after i upgraded to ubuntu 12.04 the eror gone

i have some errors on ubuntu but the major error is that befor the upgrade the 3 bottons above the keyboard was lighting 1 by 1 from left to right and backwards . which make a nice view . also one of the keys had value x or .x when i press the botton on a tayping place .

how i get the dell setting that came with the machine ?

Something is wrong here. The OS partition CANNOT BE 3GB. Ubuntu needs at LEAST 5GB just for the installation procedure.

Also I cannot understand this problem with.. "bottons" and the "lighting" and the "x value". Please describe better
or upload a picture - screenshot (if you have).

You can upload screenshots here only if you upload the screenshot to a free image hosting site (eg imgur.com) and then post here the Direct Link.

here is my partition table
http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/90/screenshotat20130415135.png/
my ubuntu installed on ext4 , if the ubuntu source stored on sda2 ? if so , why its not 700 MB . (1)

if this edition injected with Dell drivers and setting , how to extract them ? (2)
here is a pic of my installed drivers
http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/90/screenshotat20130415135.png/
after the upgrade to 12.04 the intel wireless driver gone , do i need to install it back ? (3)

here is a pic of recovery which will install 11.10 again if i used it .
http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/14/dellrecovery.png/
can i extract the Dell added settings and inject them to 12.04 source and place that source on the sda2 ? (4)
is there an ubuntu 12.04 for inspiron 5520 , which made for the same laptop but new version which i can replace the one on sda2 drilectly with out the need to extract the models and modify a source . (5)

about the 3 bottons i have uploaded a video for them , and i dont know how but they worked again ,
i dont understant , i think those botton lighting view has nothing to do with the OS installed . am i right ?
i dont know what could case that functionality error.
the last botton i pressed is the one that print the value " x " (just the x ) and not on all place , i can use it on notepad while i can't on websites ,
what is the differant between that x and the letter x (6)
what should these letter do on a windows . (7)
here is the video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uyh4BsJZ6-s&feature=youtu.be

now after i made upgrade , and the intel driver deletion , how to know if there are more removed Dell models or setting that changed , (8)

the ubuntu sound setting can increase the volume up to 150% or so . i am afraid if the upgrade changed the sound setting which could affect my speakers . (9)

i can't find any power options , how to know the configration that i am using and if there are more profiles .
is those profiles customized by Dell ? (10)

It seems you don't have the Vanilla Ubuntu environment (Unity) but gnome-shell instead. Which version of gnome-shell you have ? 3.4 ?

Ubuntu 12.04 considered as the most stable version of Ubuntu. You can try to install Ubuntu 12.04 from scratch with the vanilla desktop environment (Unity) and see if works ok.

Most of drivers are pre-isntalled, if you need help with wireless of/and graphics card drivers we are here to help.

Download Ubuntu 12.04 from here
http://releases.ubuntu.com/precise/

burn the .iso image to a DVD or USB, then boot from there and install Ubuntu from scratch. Install Ubuntu 12.04 upon 11.10.

If you made an update - release upgrade then maybe something could be wrong. Sometimes this happen.

Retry with an install from scratch.
