Dash (Launcher) How do I clean up junk?

Asked by Raoul Soibelmann

Junk icons are accumulating on Dash.
The origin of these junk icons are install/uninstall applications using Wine.
Whereas the installation fails due to application errors, or, the application does not work well.
So, uninstall using Wine Uninstaller.
The rejected application goes out OK, BUT leaves JUNK ICONS on the Dash.
Worse again, sometimes the installation fails first time, but with some adjustments, then it works.
Then I get duplicate icons, and even more.
So, my question is how can I clean up the Dash from these junk icons?
Note: I took screenshots, but don't know how to include it here.

No, this is not what happened.
When I clicked right on the mouse the menu that opened was < no image
available >
no menu.
I took a screenshot:

You must upload the screenshot to a free image host site (eg imgur.com) and then give here the "direct link".

As for the Junk Icons on Dash, I think you can clear up the "History" in Dash.

Click on Dash and write: privacy

then open in and clear All History.

Hi NikTh

I did what you said, but it did not clear the junk on the Dashboard.
I tend to think that maybe Wine is still a bit buggy, maybe leaving some
bits-n-pieces behind.
But I must say, I did manage to bring over all my "oldies" from Windows and
they are working well on Ubuntu.

*DISASTER STROKE* have to re-load Ubuntu from scratch. This will be my nice
weekend job.

How it happened: when I opened my computer this morning (Far East Time) had
notice 160MG updates.
So I started up the updates, believe had reached almost everything, but my
connection broke.
On re-start, the front shell does not work well, the update will not
restart due to all sorts of message errors, the International Accounts will
not work at all, plus a number of errors.
I am not technical enough for all that, have to make a list of the Apps,
and give it a fresh start.
I wish to keep this present problem open, just in case, because I only go
back in time, and come back with the same thing again, unless the 160MG
update is included, and that resolved the junk on the Dash.

The roadblock is on "Online Accounts" which stopped completely.
Now, the downloading of the updates has completed, after that I went to the
Terminal and entered all commands that came in the message.
But it will not Install these updates because, the message says, Online
Accounts not match the dependency, and I cannot do anything about it,
because cannot open the App Online Accounts.
Now I have do go to work, have many clients waiting for me in the office.
But later on I will make a list of all Apps on this computer. Remove
Ubuntu, and run Wubi again.

Please, if you attend to install Ubuntu from scratch do not use wubi.exe again. This is not a regular installation. Is just for testing proposes. To see Ubuntu until you decide to install it regularly.

Follow a guide from the Web and install Ubuntu to a separate partition alongside Windows. So 2 different OSs will not have an relation each other (only if you want to).

You can read here a guide about regular dual-boot of Windows and Ubuntu.

Thanks NikTH,
I am already downloading Ubuntu 13.4 64, it will take 5 hours.
I understand the mechanism of burning CD well, and I will buy one and do it
later.
The installation will be my weekend job.
 3 questions please:
     (a) if 785 MG will fit in a CD, or I will use DVD.
     (b) if my working files can be shared with Windows.
For example: My Documents with thousands of documents.
Although I maintain up-to-date files on Google Drive and also in
MS SkyDrive, there are many occasions that have to work without Internet
connection.
I have a life-long music collection 8.5 GB, at the moment it
plays equally on either Windows and/or Ubuntu
     (c) If can be installed on Drive D: where I have 100GB free space

Just for your information about the problem that we have been discussing.

I left my computer with my son-in-law to follow up all those messages.
Eventually he managed to see the good end of it, and reported that the only
thing was, gave a blank working desktop, instead of that usual
light-purple; it will not accept alternative background.
The Launcher became a bit unstable.

About a technical report on the situation, the system produced a complex
report was automatically posted by the system.
I am not using my own computer at this moment, so i will send you the
reference number of that report as soon as I get back tonight.

Many thanks for your continuous support.

Raoul

Revision history for this message

Dear NikTH

Regarding the original question Junk on Dash

I am going to close this question because we already know that it was a
left over from Wine.
Maybe the Developers of Wine should be alerted of this fault.
Maybe the Developers of Gnome should be alerted of this fault.

Regarding the second problem which turned to be much more serious, lost
stability on Ubuntu decided to reload.

1st I followed the route of Burn DVD Image.
The DVD came out well, my son-in-law tested on his computer.
However, my present computer has some built-in protection against
Image software.
Nothing of this type would work on this machine.
But I am not worried because I am about to change computers anyway.

2nd Went through Wubi once again, first had to download Ubuntu 12.10 which
came down very well.

3rd came automatic update to Ubuntu 13.04, which is he present situation.
Here I had some nasty experiences.
I just opened two questions: (a) WINE will not install
                                                (b) SKYPE will not install.

Grrrr, I had all this working on my previous installation, so what
happened now?

Anyway, the two questions are on the board, lets see what comes next.

Thanking you very much for your kind cooperation.

Great news, the Image File of Ubuntu finally worked on my computer.
There was a small problem on the hardware configuration of the drive, which
was resolved.

The installation of Ubundu 13.04 from the Image Disk came clean, clear and
very fast.

Re-assure you that all those problems have disappeared.

Time to close this case and open the bottle of Champagne.

Three cheers,

Raoul S
