Enable Windows XP to reclaim disk space after deleting Ubuntu 12.04

Asked by Julianloui

I unwittingly deleted Ubuntu 12.04 tonight before I recovered the space alloted to it during installation time. Can someone tell me how to enable Windows XP to reclaim this disk space. Thank you all very much.

You can reclaim the free space by booting up using Ubuntu installation media. Then, select "Try Ubuntu" and once Ubuntu Unity session is fully loaded, click on Ubuntu logo in Unity's launcher, and type "Gparted" (without quote). Select the corresponding result in the dash.

Once Gparted Partition Editor is fully initialised, make sure that your hard disk is selected as the disk for the partition editor on the disk selector located on the right of the application window. Then, in the partition list, select the Windows partition, right click on it, and click resize. After that, use your mouse to move the slider to match your preference. Then, click OK and click Apply Changes.

Hope it helps.

First of all you must boot from a Windows XP CD and restore the bootloader of Windows, or else you will not be able to boot into Windows anymore.

The procedure to restore the Windows bootloader is easy ..
Here is how to

1. Boot up with your Windows XP disc.

2. Select the option Recovery Console.

3. At the prompt, type "fdisk /mbr" (without the quotes of course)

4. Restart your computer.

Then boot into Windows and open "disk management", from there you can delete the Ubuntu partitions and resize the space to allocate it.

Hi. Pavarin and NikTh,

I apologize that It has taken me so long to respond due to a persistent Seagate hard-drive problem on my HP Compaq computer.

Thank you so much for your very helpful advice, which I have tried. Unfortunately I encountered a hard-drive problem after I set up Ubunut to select Windows XP as the default operating system. Now when I try to boot up Windows XP, I always see "A read disk error. Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete to restart". It re-appears when I press Ctrl-Alt-delete. Luckily I still can use Ubuntu.
