/usr/share/file/magic directory is empty (package libmagic1)

Asked by braoult

On Raring: I wanted to view the "magic" file used by the file utility (not the compiled magic.mgc) . The package "libmagic1" (installed: 5.11-2ubuntu4) should provide it.

- /etc/magic has nothing
- /usr/share/misc/magic is a link to /usr/share/file/magic
But:
- /usr/share/file/magic is a directory which is empty. It should either be a file, or a dir containing the source file(s).

I installed also libmagic-dev (5.11-2ubuntu4), but still no "magic" file.

It seems that there is no uncompiled 'magic' file supplied by libmagic1 (or other packages) any more, just the compiled magic.msc.

You could look in the source of its source package "file",
e.g. in http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-branches/ubuntu/saucy/file/saucy/files/head:/magic/Magdir/

Hi Manfred,

Thanks for your answer, but I cannot say it helps a lot :-)

Of course, I can now find the sources, by browsing your link, but there should be an easier way to get it (maybe in a "file-dev" package, which is also missing).

For me a missing file-dev package can be considered as a bug.
