Asus USB-N13 wifi adaptor drops connections

Mythbuntu 12.04 with 0.26 mythtv installed.
I am using an Asus USB-N13 Wifi adapter version b1 (USB ID 0b05:17ab).
It is using the rtl8192cu driver.
The device is successfully connecting to an 802.11n access point. The access point (a dd-wrt router) is not recording any errors against this device.

Problem 1. The device only ever connects at 150 Mb/s. It never manages to connect at the full 300 Mb/s that the Asus specs indicate thta is is capable of. Testing on a Windows7 PC resulted in a 300 Mb/s connection to the same access point. How do I get the full speed out of this device under Ubuntu 12.04.

Problem 2. The device periodically drops it's connection with the access point. This can occur both when there is no active data activity, and during data transfers. The error does not occur when tested on the Win7. What do I need to do to getba stable connection from this device under Ubuntu 12.04 ?

Note: I tried an Xubuntu 13.04 LiveCD boot, and found that under that version of the OS, the device does not work at all. A live boot under the latest SUSE live ce resulted in similar problems to 13.04.

If I can provide further info, copies of logs, etc, please advice.

Further information:

When the device drops it's connection to the access point, attempts to reconnect result in continued failures with the OS asking for tge access point password to be re-entered. The simplest way to get the device to reconnect is to un-plug the USB device from the computer and reinsert it. It then reconnects in a matter of seconds with no user input.

Did you install a driver for this device, or are you using a preinstalled driver?

I previously had an issue with exactly the same driver, and I never got it fixed... I'll keep looking for a solution.

Thanks very much for your assistance ..... but, unfortunately downloading and compiling the new realtek driver was a failure. The make component of the came up with heaps of errors. You can have a look at

From reading the doco that came with the download, the install.sh method is intended for PC-Linux, and I think for a 32 bit OS - not the 64 bit that I've got installed. There are some limited instruction included re modifying the make file for other platforms,, but after reviewing them, they are well beyond my experience level.

I only got this adaptor last week (because ASUS advertise it as Linuc compatible from certain kernel versions upwards), so I haven't tried it on any older versions. I think I still have an Xubuntu 11.## ISO on the NAS so I'll boot that up as a LiveUSB distro and see what happens. I'm also going to re-run the 13.04 LiveUSB to capture some data and log it as a bug.

Okay, as a last resort, you could try logging in as root with : sudo su and try again, but I'll see if I can find a driver for 64-bit.

Sorry -- I should have mentioned that I'd already tried running the install using sudo - same errors ....... As the manufacturer states that the device is Linux (specifically Ubuntu) compatible, I've lodged a support call with them. It will be interesting to see what they say. Today 'm going to download and try a liveUSB version of the 32bit version of Mythbuntu 12.04 to see if the 32 bit driver actually works in 12.04 32 bit. In the meantime I'll wait for teh response from ASUS support.
