Ubuntu 13.04 lost Sound Drive - points to Dummy

Asked by Raoul Soibelmann

It happened upon migration to Ubuntu 13.04, Rhythmbox would not play my collection of .MID sounds.
The others were playing well.
So, I did not know what to do, went through Ubuntu Apps Center, installed every piece of software that said or looked that my .MIDies would play again.
But at one point they were not installing without errors, and were not de-installing without error.
Then the disaster occurred, the All Applications/SOUND gave me "Dummy Output" and the sound disappeared completely.
Also disappeared the input "Record the Sound From", although I don't use recording.

So, the situation now is this: Dummy Output, no sound at all, and I don't know how to resolve this problem.

What I suspect could maybe be the cause: some of the sound drivers modify ALSA, which I don't understand well, but apparently add/remove the wiring of the computer. MAYBE (not sure) one of these have accidentally put my speakers on Dummy Output?

What is the output of:

wget -O alsa-info.sh http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-info.sh && chmod +x ./alsa-info.sh && ./alsa-info.sh --upload

Thanks, but I found many things going wrong with my upgraded version 13.04.

So, I uninstalled it completely, and re-installed from scratch.

Followed up the 10 steps, and now everything is working very well.

Many thanks for your kind reply.

I got a similar problem, if
sudo alsa fore-reload
,my sound card come back in audio setting option, I can adjust the volume, then I restart the X window and I can test the sound, but if reboot the computer, "dummy output" again.

Thanks for the attention.

As said before, I had to uninstall Ubuntu, and re-install. That resolved
all problems, except that I lost my old .MIDIES. Now on version 13.04
Rhythmbox will not play .MID anymore. I tried VCL, but the same, does not
have appropriate CODEC.

This is also the only bug that I found with the new version 13.04, the
CODEC for playing .MID disappeared.

I had to re-load 13.04 from new, that resolved all problems, BUT lost the
CODEC to play .MID music.

That is the only remaining problem.

install timidity

Installed timidity, that worked.
It is playing MID now.

But, this is a very primitive application which needs serious
re-development.

What I needed really is to find the old MID plugin from Ubuntu 12 and
install it on 13.04

Thanking you for the continuous support.
