"Server not found" in Firefox all the time with ubuntu

Asked by shokhrukh

I am am totally new to Ubuntu, but have already love it. Just decided to try and really wanna keep it. But I have a weird problem with network connections (or it may be web browser problems. I am runnung Ubuntu 7.10 on my Acer TravelMate 3260AWXMi. Everything seems to work fine. No installation problems (except it could not connect to the security updates site during the installation).

The problem is that eventhough it shows that it is connected to a network (either wireless or wired), Firefox won't load the page mostly giving the "Server not found" error (but sometimes it just freezes at "Looking up "host". I tried to ping and all that stuff to see if it's really connected, and it seems it is. Tried other browsers - no help. Tried to reinstall the system a few time - also no effect.

Can anyone help me with this? I really don't want to go back to Windows after Ubuntu. Thanks much.

Then try to visit this network address: http://82.105.36.210/

If it works, please open System->Administration->Network select your network device
select the dns tab and add dns for examples openDNS

208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

https://www.opendns.com/start

----- if you a still in trouble

Please open a Terminal from the menu Applications->Accessories->Terminal type:

cat /etc/resolv.conf

and

ifconfig -a

and copy and paste the result here

Thank you

Hi marcorba. Thanks for the reply. I tried to connect http://82.105.36.210/, but firefox got stuck at "Connecting to ...".

Then, I did exactly what you recommended and here's the output for the terminal commands:

barno@barno-laptop:~$ cat /etc/resolv.conf

So you have two network cards, try ping the 209.85.129.147 a google ip address

Open a terminal and type:
ping 209.85.129.147
stop it with ctrl+c

Have you added the dns server ips i can't see thet into the resolv .conf

Please also to set as default gateway the router address 192.168.1.1 into the two nic card using the System->Adm->Network menu.

Please tell us your router brand and model may be you must configure and use ppp with the pppoeconf utility to get connection.

Thank you

macobra,

1) ping gave me only one line (didn't have to stop it):

PING 209.85.129.147 (209.85.129.147) 56(84) bytes of data.

2) I don't know if I have added the dns server ips. How do I do that?

3) I set the default gateway (Static IP, IP adres 192.168.1.2 , Subnet mask 255 etc)

And now Firefox loaded yahoo.com. For a moment I thought how wonderful my life was. I decided to double-check if everything was working ok, and restarted the computer. Now it is back where it was: it connects to the network, but Firefox would not load pages again. Arrgh.

I tried to set the gateway again, and it does not seem to help this time.

Well what do you think the problem is? Is there any way I can permannetly fix this.

Thanks again.

BTW, can't tell what the router brand and model are cuz I am using my neighbors unsecured network (which works fine on my other windows-based laptop). I also couldn't make Ubuntu work with my broadband cable connection (it says it's connected to the wired network, but firefox won't work here too).
