dual boot, install screen - one of three options missing

Asked by Chuck Vaughan

I got Ubuntu for dummies with live disk 6,1. I am installing it as a dual boot. I repartitioned the hard drive and all went well, When I come to the install screen there should be three choices according to the book: "Resize Partition and use Free Space", "Erase Entire Disk", and "Manually Edit Partition Table". The "Resize Partition" is what I want to do, but that option is missing. I tried several times and don't know enough to try anything else. I certainly don't want to erase the whole hard drive. how do I get Ubuntu to resize the partition or does someone have instructions that a non-geek can use to manually edit the partition table?

Could you please provide details as to how you want to partition your hard drive and the current layout of the hard drives.

Thanks for the response. I don't know enough to answer the question. Following the book, it seemed that Ubuntu would automatically know how to resize for the appropriate amount of space. That option didn't even show up the way the book pictured it. I have only one hard drive and following the instructions in the book, I moved the partition to free up about 1.1 MBS for Ubuntu. Do you know why only the options to erase the disk or manually edit partition table came up?

Could you please provide some information about that hard drive, also what is it's total capacity.

Going to the "hardware" tab, the drive is listed as WDC 200BB-....... It now says that 9.0 GB is used and 1.7 GB is free. When I moved the partition in preparation for installing, it appeared that about half of the capacity was free. The system I am running now is Windows 2000 Professional.

I think your problem is that your Hard Drive does not have enough space since 1.7 Gb of free space is not enough for Ubuntu to use after resizing.

So in order to install Ubuntu you will need to either:-
1) Format the entire hard drive.
2) Purchase a new hard drive and install Ubuntu on it.

P.S. Ubuntu needs at least 4Gb of free space to install properly.

Please force a full hard-disk check from Win2000 (space + data).
Sometimes errors on existent win partitions may be an issue for mounting and resizing them from Ubuntu.

Thank you

Thanks so much. I was really surprised at how much space was taken up when I looked at the resources. I'll probably dump some more programs out of the Windows side and create more room. My goal is to get rid of the windows as soon as I can get everything working using Ubuntu. I really like the concept of community and I'm hoping to go entirely Linux. This has been a great experience and much appreciated. There are several friends who are watching my Linux experiment with great interest.

Thanks again,

Chuck
