how can i change mac address in ubuntu 7.10

how can i change mac address in ubuntu 7.10....i have a static ip and i,m using eth0 and mac address given by my internet cable provider..so i enter ip..but i won;t know how to change my lancard mac address. tell me plz..the answer they give to it's not working...my net is not working

I suppose that your interface is eth0 :
You first need to turn it off:
"ifconfig eth0 down"
Then you can put the adress you want by typing :
"ifconfig eth0 hw ether xx :xx :xx :xx :xx :xx"

That's it.

Still, I quite surprised by the fact your internet provider gives you a mac address ...

There is also a tool called macchanger. I think you add it with

sudo apt-get install macchanger

but not 100% sure of the package name (stuck on win at the moment).

Did neither of the answers above work? Can you provide any more details? Georges' reply should work fine. After you are connected to can install macchanger if you want.

Of course, the normal way to get online when your mac is required is to give the ISP your mac and have then set it as valid in their system rather than changing the mac of your hardware since it's difficult to make this kind of change permanent. This is usually required for cable internet (at least my cable internet) and it's usually just a phone call.
