Windows boot manager runs even when Ubuntu is selected.

Asked by Paul O'Hea

I've installed Ubuntu using the windows installer tool. On restarting, an option for Windows 8 and Ubuntu was displayed and I selected Ubuntu.

However the next screen was windows boot manager displaying an error message that windows 8 had failed to start, and prompting me to repair windows, however Windows 8 still boots correctly when selected.

Windows 8 with its "secure boot" and the new UEFI bios thing is hard to get around. I recently purchased a laptop with Windows 8 and it took me almost two days to figure out how to install Ubuntu on it. Now, I didn't have dual boot because I absolutely despise Windows, especially Windows 8. You will probably never be able to dual boot with that laptop because of the secure boot option which basically prevents people from booting any other O/S. It was done deliberately by Windows to force you to use their crappy O/S. If I were you I would ditch them while you still can. I ditched them completely two years ago and never looked back. If you do decide to go with Ubuntu as your only O/S, and you use a USB stick to install, you have to allow "legacy USB" in bios before you change the boot order, or it won't work. So basically you can't dual boot, is the answer. I tried it the same way as you when I was trying to install Ubuntu, and the same thing happened. Hope this helps, hope you switch to Ubuntu full time(you won't regret it!)

Actually, I found this useful resource on ubuntu.com:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFI

Also it says you have to use the 64-bit version. Hope you find what you need on that page.

Can you help with this problem?
