no grub screen

Asked by Ronald

No grub screen after update to 12.04 LTS. When booting i get a black screen with a flooting panel tha says something about video frecrency. I found that if i hit the down button once and enter i get the log in screen. I boots to 12.04 and works fine. If i hold the down button down at bootup it will boot to the windows OS. Up dated from 10.04 LTS to 12.04 LTS.

Try to use boot-repair and see if this fixes your problem

boot-repair instructions : https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Boot-Repair#A2nd_option_:_install_Boot-Repair_in_Ubuntu

Focus on second option (page I gave).

Its nothing to do with boot repair. The res just needs setting so that it shows as the monitor / display is not doing what it should so grub needs configuring. Did you use the web to find guides?

I used on one of then to change resolution. Change resolution in grub. Then run update-grub. It run for a long time and i rebooted and same problem. Checked resolution in grub and it changed it to the setting put in. After reboot still no grub screen. Is there a way to rerun the upgrade to 12.04 again. I run the updates that came up and it has been running for a long time also( an hour +). It seems like the whole upgrade didn't run right.

If the upgrade progress failed or you think that didn't ran right , you can re-install Ubuntu 12.04 .

It is about 20 to 30 minutes procedure.

You can download the iso image from here
http://releases.ubuntu.com/precise/

and create a bootable CD/DVD or USB-stick.

Boot from there and re-install Ubuntu to the same location where it is now.

Do not forget to BACKUP your important (personal) files BEFORE the installation .. for any case.
