Graphics Driver + Resolution

Asked by Corky Blackney

AMD 690G . ATI SB600 . ATI Radeon X1250-based graphics . Ubuntu 12.10

New user to Linux, problems with screen resolution, "Displays" says "Unknown" even though I've ran Mesa-Utils.

xrandr -q reports;

Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1024 x 768, maximum 8192 x 8192
VGA-0 connected 1024x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 0mm x 0mm
   1024x768 60.0*
   800x600 60.3 56.2
   848x480 60.0
   640x480 59.9

Note the; "8192 X 8192" Maximum

lspci reports;

01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI RS690 [Radeon X1200 Series]

I've two of these motherboards (Asus M2A-VM), Windows 8 allows screen resolution for;

1600 X 1200, 1400 X 1050, 1280 X 1024, 1152 X 864 above 1024 X 768

I've tried forcing a greater resolution above 1024 X 768 which of course fails... ("xrandr -s" - "Only 4 choices")

Ran Mesa-Utils and was able to get "Gallium 0.4 on ATI RS690" instead of "Graphics Unknown" for "About this Computer" but, NOT in "Displays" in the "Control Panel"

Still appears there is yet some other driver I could use, there are "Radeon" Xserver-Xorg files installed with this version (12.10 Quatal Quetzal), I've yet to figure out which one MIGHT be my resolution or even how to use them...

Any help is appreciated...

I'd start troubleshooting by follwoing: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Config/Resolution

# in addition , see if there is driver-updates for your current used one .. Go to : Dash > Software & update > additional Drivers

Thanx, tried "Additional Drivers", no results, it was empty.

Found the dir (Folder) labeled "Xserver-Xorg-Video-Radeon" that contained a script with the following;

#!/bin/sh

PATH="/sbin:$PATH"
CONFIG_DIR=/etc/X11
SERVER_BINARY=/usr/bin/Xorg
SERVER_SYMLINK="$CONFIG_DIR/X"
XORGCONFIG="$CONFIG_DIR/xorg.conf"
XORGCONFIG_DIR="$CONFIG_DIR/xorg.conf.d"
CONFIG_AUX_DIR=/var/lib/x11
X11R6_LIBS=/usr/X11R6/lib
LOCAL_LIBS=/usr/local/lib

This is NOT the complete script.

Like I said, new to this, is this a script for installing the correct Open graphics driver? Where do I run it and how is the question?

# also, i forgot to mention , you should also check your xorg and kernel logs in /var/log/

thery're text files , look for something suspicuse and related to your GPU driver .

you may wish to paste the log here using a paste service, so that someone might help you examine the logs with you .

I use cURL with http://sprunge.us to as follow :

cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | curl -F 'sprunge=<-' http://sprunge.us

there is also a tool : pastebinit

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Pastebinit

Good luck!

I suggest trying the suggestion from forumuser astex at this location:

http://askubuntu.com/questions/207716/ubuntu-12-10-resolution-stuck-at-1024x768-using-open-source-radeon-driver

You will probably need to replace LVDS1 with VGA-0 in the instructions given by astex.

Thanx! Tried your suggestion, here is the result;

  xrandr -q

Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1024 x 768, maximum 8192 x 8192
VGA-0 connected 1024x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 0mm x 0mm
   1024x768 60.0*
   800x600 60.3 56.2
   848x480 60.0
   640x480 59.9
S-video disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
HDMI-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DVI-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
  1152x864_60.00 (0x24c) 81.8MHz
        h: width 1152 start 1216 end 1336 total 1520 skew 0 clock 53.8KHz
        v: height 864 start 867 end 871 total 897 clock 60.0Hz

Notice that "-- newmode" put the NEW setting under "DVI-0" and NOT "VGA-0", there doesn't appear to be a way to force it to VGA-0. Looked like it should work... The "-- addmode" was an incorrect syntax error basically and therefore gave me the help instructions for the command.

Ok, "User Error" on my part, kept playing with it, have it now. Will it be there on a reboot? Thought I saw something about putting it into a start script, which I cannot find now...

Also, Display says unknown, Anyone know of a "Viewsonic" [VA2431WM] Open driver? The Viewsonic page has it for "Win" only...

Setting were gone when "xrandr -q" was checked...

I don't want to continue to receive this message, is there a way to keep the settings without this error message. Make the settings permanent?

Making the settings permanent was already explained in post #3 in this thread.

See post #3 by Sary Muhammad (sary)

More specifically, you need to follow this part of the instructions:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Config/Resolution#Setting_xrandr_commands_in_.xprofile

It appears that the settings will NOT work based on my last post of the "Could not apply the stored configuration for monitors".

I've been forced to reload (twice) as the "XML" file could NOT be found to remove the error message. Using the method so far will cause the error message, I tried it again on the 1st reload, after rebooting, the message appeared. Seems to me that a drivers for both the card and the display are needed.

I DID find a "Radeon" folder, but, my lack of training with Linux means I still cannot figure out how to use it or if it is already being used.

BTW, I did find the files for "FGLRX" forcing me yet again to reload as they must be for a laptop (that is what the System Settings for Display said) and I had no unity bar and a blank desktop.

So it is back to the drawing board and the search is on for a driver, the previous information should be very useful when the drivers are found (if such exists).

Salutations Corky, Mark .

Corky : your system is already using the Radeon open source drive .

 if you look at the #configuration line: from the output of " lshw -C video " , and the lsmod output .. it stated the drive name as " radeon "is loaded and being in use .

the package for the driver is .. " xserver-xorg-video-radeon " , which Ubuntu is using by default for any Radeon(HD) chip, installing xserver-xorg-video-ati which installs xserver-xorg-video-radeon by dependency.

# See what AMD has stated about ATI drivers :

AMD has moved a number of DX9 ATI Radeon™ graphics accelerators products to a legacy driver support structure. This change impacts Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Linux distributions. AMD has moved to a legacy software support structure for these graphics accelerator products in an effort to better focus development resources on future products.

The following products have been moved to the legacy software support structure (including Mobile and All-in-Wonder Variants):

ATI Radeon 9500 Series
ATI Radeon 9550 Series
ATI Radeon 9600 Series
ATI Radeon 9700 Series
ATI Radeon 9800 Series
ATI Radeon X300 Series
ATI Radeon X550 Series
ATI Radeon X600 Series
ATI Radeon X700 Series
ATI Radeon X800 Series
ATI Radeon X850 Series
ATI Radeon X1050 Series
ATI Radeon X1300 Series
ATI Radeon X1550 Series
ATI Radeon X1600 Series
ATI Radeon X1650 Series
ATI Radeon X1800 Series
ATI Radeon X1900 Series
ATI Radeon Xpress Series
ATI Radeon X1200 Series
ATI Radeon X1250 Series
ATI Radeon X2100 Series

Any customers using a combination of a ATI Radeon™ HD 2000 Series, ATI Radeon™ HD 3000 Series, or ATI Radeon™ HD 4000 Series product with any of the legacy products listed above in a single PC system must use the ATI Catalyst 9.3 or earlier driver. All future ATI Catalyst™ releases made available past the ATI Catalyst™ 9.3 release will not include support for the legacy products listed above or any of the features associated with those legacy products.

AMD may periodically provide Windows XP and Windows Vista driver updates (for the products listed above) for critical fixes only. No new features will be provided in future driver updates. The Linux ATI Catalyst™ driver will only be supported in Linux distributions prior to February 2009 for the legacy products listed above.

Corky:

maybe you could try with the driver RadeonHD ! but not quite sure how will would that turn out. and if seen few complains with this driver about audi issues!

as for fglrx , i don't see it loaded, you may wish to check again running lsmod , and see if fglrx is set there .. if you think it's interrupting with open source driver .. you could always remove it running the proper script and then with apt-get -- purge as follow :

sudo sh /usr/share/ati/fglrx-uninstall.sh ( if file exist ).

sudo apt-get remove --purge fglrx fglrx_* fglrx-amdcccle* fglrx-dev*

you could also use modeprop to load drivers and unload with rmmod

# for installing driver form an sh script , you just need to cd to the correct dir /path that contain the sh script and then inside it , run

sudo sh installerfilename.run

# if you're plaining on installing switching between drivers , always remember to reconfigure xserver and xorx , running :

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

then ..

sudo reboot

Scratch that , don't try the HD driver or any other as there is a big chance of making things worse!

Try this setup with these steps :

while the monitor is attached , obtian the correct information for your monitor form X.org last logs in /var/log/Xorg.0.log

look for the modeline and replace the informations with the following lines , as explained on this link :
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Config/Resolution#Adding_undetected_resolutions

then, for example .. run the commands as root - sudo

# xrandr --newmode "1920x1080_60.00_hsync" 148.50 1920 2008 2052 2200 1080 1084 1089 1125 +hsync +vsync
# xrandr --addmode VGA-0 "1920x1080_60.00_hsync"
# xrandr --output VGA-0 --mode "1920x1080_60.00_hsync"
