manual feed ONLY on LJ P2015dn

Asked by Chachacharlie

New HP LJ P2015DN on home network (wired ethernet through dumb switch). Running Ubuntu 7.1x with all current updates and built in HPLIP.

Computer recognized printer right away, and install was actually easier than XP, which had to be reconfigured manually. Full access to printer's web server setup page through its URL. PROBLEM: Any print job sent from Linux machine sent as Manual Feed. Printer does not respond, other than blinking Attention light. As soon as I load paper in the upper tray, printing commences. Both XP PC's on same network, however, start printing automatically as soon as Print box button clicked.

When printing from Linux box, the Device Status (default) page on the printer's web server says
"Status: Manual feed
PLAIN,
LETTER
Press [OK] for available media"

When printing from Windows box, it merely says
"Status: Ready

QUESTION: Is there any way to force HPLIP or Ubuntu to send print job to printer so printing starts automatically, rather than waiting for me to load paper in the top tray?

Learned from various web sources that the PPD built into Ubuntu's HPLIP has an error: it mistakenly identifies the manual input tray as the default paper sourse. Found this "custom PPD" (http://openprinting.org/foomatic-db/db/source/PPD/HP/HP_LaserJet_P2015.ppd) on the Linux Foundation/OpenPrinting.org page for this printer. (http://openprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=HP-LaserJet_P2015)

Uninstalled printer from Ubuntu. Reinstalled, but this time clicked on option to install custom PPD and used new download. Problem solved.
