This kernel requires an x86-64 CPU, but only detected an i686 CPU

Asked by Jason Smith

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit yet when I try to run xubuntu in VirtualBox, I get this error message. Why does it not detect that i am running a 64-bit CPU?

Your CPU doesnt support or does not have enabled the 64bit extension needed for 64bit guest OSes. So you will only be able to install 32bit guest systems.
Why do you need 64bit in your guest anyway?

I dunno. I just guessed that since my CPU was 64-bit that I needed the 64-bit version of Xubuntu.

I'd use a light desktop like LXDE or XFCE. It will give a more responsive OS
