Repeated lock outs after installing Ubuntu 12.10 with all updates

Asked by Martin Dixon

I get repeated (various) system error messages, screen distortions and lock outs after installing Ubuntu 12.10 with all updates, but no lock outs an very few messages without updates.

I have used Ubuntu for about two years updating the version and adding updates as they were made available. When I initially upgraded to 12.10 it appeared rather slow so I reverted to 12.04 LTS.

I received updates for 12.04 last week which appeared to cause error messages and lock outs. After finally purchasing the 12.04 CD and 12.10 DVD and considerable effort I determined that I could install 12.10 without any updates and have no lock outs and very few messages. I have examined the AskUbuntu records and attempted to find related bug reports without much success. Without some assurance that there is a known problem/bug which has been corrected I will continue to use the base issue. Is there cure? I

have screen prints and photos covering some of the 'effects' and would be prepared to assist further if requested, but I would advise that I have ME which causes me some challenges and might affecvt my ability.

I might have been able to add further information if I had been able to identify an actual update which appeared to create the problem - starting from the initial release there will be a number of occasions when my system is stable - is it possible to reverse the effects of a single, or multiple updates done symultaneously so that one can isolate the update causing the problem?

For example I used 12.04 as mentioned above and all appeared to be well until I applied the updates (which I believe I received on 19th. March, but certainly included an update to the Linux kernel). If I had been able to reverse those specific updates I could have applied them one at a time to determine which caused the problem.

I have used Clonezilla, but it did not succeed to recover successfully when I tried it in the above 12.04 case.

Would Knoppix provide a mechanism for providong stage restore points or is there a better system?

Having installed 12.04 and 12.10 together I have now successfully used Redobackup to trial an update path - DVD issued 12.10 appears to work OK with no updates. Updated with all Security updates to date, but no Recommended updates results in daigonal barred screen and lockout of all except mouse. I have reverted to the bare issue 12.10 and will not attempt further trials. Correction to system info above ISUS should read ASUS. I cannot aford the time to trial the same route on 12.04 and will awaitrelease of 13.04 with great interest.

Current status.

1. I have a working Puppy on an old machine - nothing else works (11.04, 12.04, 12.10 for example).
2. On my main m/c I have 12.10 working OK without any updates (with the occasional missing flash files and updates available messages)
3. I have installed 12.10 alongside 2 above and it fails when I try to upgrade without updates and if I then try to update. (Latest on this is a pink screen with movable mouse only although there were prior signs on the router that a "report" may have been sent).

4. I am awaiting a new pendrive so that I can replace 3 above with a clean 13.04.

Is my situation unique - in which case I will "shut up" and continue to "do it my way" or is there something here that could be valuable to ANother - in which case I may need a bit of advice as to how to get at the detail?

Although I may have created massive confusion - there has been no real progress - I am flagging this as solved!
