How do you install Pidgin on Ubuntu 7.10?

Asked by Johann Delgado

Hello everyone,

I am extremely new to the whole Unix/Linux operating system community, and I currently have both Windows XP and Ubuntu 7.10 installed on the same hard drive. I find this very convenient as I do not know too much about source codes, compiling, or even how to use the terminal, so I switch back and forth between the two.

Here's my first of many common issues. I found out that in order to use Instant Messaging, I could use this program called Pidgin. I downloaded the package without any problems from the following website:

http://www.pidgin.im/download/

However, I have no clue on how to install pidgin on my computer so that I can get it up and running. Is there anyone that can help me in the simplest and most detailed way possible on how to properly install pidgin so that I can finally use it?

I'd really appreciate your help

Thanks

Dear Johann Delgado,

You should already have Pidgin if you have installed the Ubuntu 7.10 standard. To access Pidgin:

1. Click the Ubuntu menu.
2. Goto the Internet sub-menu within the Ubuntu menu.
3. Click "Pidgin Internet Messenger".

Thanks for all the suggestions.

However, after trying to install from the Add applications menu, I got an error saying that there was a previous version in conflict with the one I was requesting to install and to go and solve this conflict using the synaptics Package Manager. I was lost on how to use it at first.

When using Terminal, I was confused at first because it required a password. I realized that even as I typed, not even asterisks showed up to indicate that
I was typing it, which confused me a little bit, so I tried the Package Manager again.

After a bit of exploring around the manager, I inputted my password, and in the search engine I typed pidgin. It gave me a list of pidgin and all related packages. Beforehand I did a bit of research and realized the older version was Gaim. I clicked on the first package on the list (which was Gaim) and clicked "Mark to Install", and then clicked apply.

After a series of confirmations and installations, the pidgin program showed up on my "Internet" menu. What a surprise!

Once again, thanks for the suggestions though. I know that installing stuff will be trickier in the future so I might come back with another question.
