Can't install addititonal software (7.10)

Asked by Diesel

Hi people.
I am a Ubuntu newbie (eager to shed my Microsoft shell) but I am running into barriers constantly. Most I have solved on my own, however this one is really starting to bug me.

I am trying to install additional software, specifically VLC, but also others, however when using ADD/REMOVE under Applications, I can find VLC but when I select it I am told that

CANNOT INSTALL 'VLC'
This application conflicts with other installed software. To install 'vlc' the conflicting software must be removed first.

Switch to the 'synaptic' package manager to resolve this conflict.

OK. I can follow instructions as well as the next guy.

So I do this and cannot find vlc.
Had a little look around here for solutions, found one, used it an lo, there is vlc.
So i mark it for installation and get more problems:

MARK ADDITIONAL REQUIRED CHANGES?
The chosen action also effectsother packages.
The following changes are required in order to proceed.

(LIST OF CHANGES - DO I REALLY NEED TO TYPE THEM ALL HERE???)

So I continue, by selecting the MARK button, which leads me to the following error:

COULD NOT MARK ALL PACKAGES FOR INSTALLATION OR UPGRADE

vlc:
Depends: vlc-nox but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libsdl-image1.2 (>=1.2.5) but it is not installable
Depends: ttf-dejavu but it is not installable

So basically, as this was occurring with all other software i attempted to install, I though AHA! Maybe my install corrupted? Thus i downloaded a new image, buned to CD and reinstalled, bu lo and behold I run into exactly the same issues.

Next time I reinstalled I attempted to install BEFORE any updates to Ubuntu OS were made, but still the same errors are occurring.

Am I just not GETTING IT or is there actually something wrong?
I really want to be able to install additional software, but if i cannot then the Microsoft door will still be open, tempting me with the light of it's open fire............ .. . .. .. . .. . . . . . ..

This is strange, you definitely shouldn't be having those kinds of problems on a fresh install..

When you booted from the disk did you try the 'Check CD for defects' option?

I found this bug, same problem as you're having but it has been reported for Hardy (next version of Ubuntu) - https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/vlc/+bug/173391
Probably won't help you but it might be worth a look.

Yeah buddy, checked for defaults and all was fine. Sorry to say, your second contribution was of no help either.
It's odd, because it all worked just fine a couple of months back when I was trying out 7.04 on this machine. I just want 7.10 because it just 'feels' better that 04.
Maybe I ought to wait til 8.04? Maybe all will be fine by then.

Its so strange it, but it you wanna install it, you must download from vlc homepage and compile it. Try to look at your sources on /etc/apt/sources.list and add some multiverse options, but copy this from a template that you can find on internet. This could solve the problem of some packages that cant be installed.
