Firefox action when clicking links in other applications

Asked by Frank Pope

I am running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS 64 bit. If I click a link in an application, e.g. MatLab, and Firefox is already active I get the message "Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system." How do I get Firefox to simply open the link in new tab or window? It's a pain to copy and paste links from other applications into Firefox.

Lucid is EOL in a few weeks. I suggest you upgrade to Precise sooner rather than later.

I just found the solution. I needed to create a profile (other than 'default') by doing firefox -ProfileManager. Once i did that firefox works as expected with links opening in a new tab.
