network print server

Asked by JohnL

I have a Netgear print server which is configured with WinXP (used by three computers). After installing KUBUNTU (rel 6.10), I can't access my printer (brother HL-1440). I know all the setting from Windows but none seem to match Kubuntu such as the WinXP port name of "PS326186_P1" is not accepted by the Print wizard. The Netgear documentation and email help is of no use. So how does one go about getting a printer to work? I'll admit I'm new to Linux and want to leave Windows but seem to be spending way more time trying to resolve this and other little problems. Need some help. Thanks

I think PS326186_P1 is probably an internal name WinXP gives the port.

You probably need the IP address of the print server. Can this be found in the settings for the printer on the WinXP box?

Is there a way to 'ping' the print server or use a Bash command to get the real IP address, port name?

Just wanted to check on your print server, did you get it working? Exactly which model of print server is it?

Ok, goto System-->Administration-->Printing
Select add printer
Choose Network Printer: Unix-printer (LPD)
In the host field enter the IP of your PS110
and in the cue field you enter the port your printer is connected to on the PS110 e.g P1 or P2.
Then you select the brand and model of your printer.

Let me know if that works for you.

I have had the similar problem of not being able to use my HP Laserjet 6MP from my Linux boxes via the LAN and the PS110. Thank you williamts99! With your advice it worked right away with Kubuntu 6.06 and Kubuntu 6.10.

Oh yes, John, it seems that you don't know the IP address of your print server. To know the print server’s IP address, press and hold the RESET button for two seconds. The printer will
print out the print server status report, where it includes the IP address information.

Sorry for the delay, I thought I responded to this thread but may have failed to submit it. The printer on the print server is working great. The suggested fix from Williamts99 was the ticket. I also was glad to hear how to correctly identify the printer name.

Thanks to all that helped. I'm going to return to this forum for future questions.
