Can ENVI/IDL run on UBUNTU?

Asked by Dianne McDonnell

I will be installing ENVI/IDL on a new workstation and want to try it with UBUNTU. ENVI/IDL is a remote sensing software that can run on LINUX. Has anyone tried this? I asked the software company, but they aren't familiar with UBUNTU (at least the not the person I spoke with).

Dear Dianne McDonnell,

It may be possible to run ENVI/IDL on Ubuntu. Based upon this bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libx11/+bug/106679, I suspect that some workarounds exist to get it up and running. Give it a shot! I am sure that the company will help you with any problems that you may experience. For instance, Ubuntu is mentioned on their "Tech Tip" page: http://www.ittvis.com/services/techtip.asp?ttid=4177, where they seem to provide a solution to a common problem that Ubuntu/Debian users experience with the software.
