Downloaded installation won't run

Asked by Nikos Balkanas

Hi,

I run Windows 7 64x on Intel CPU. I downloaded the 64bit version of Ubuntu 12.04.2 from your site, it says AMD. Mounted the iso image and double clicked on wubi.exe. Got the busy cursor for a while but nothing happened. Tried 4-5x with no luck. How can i try/install Ubuntu? I have my partitions ready for a dual boot system, and waiting for the installation.

Thanks
Nikos

Why not resize your NTFS in Windows then install to the freed space. It gives a much better OS which is easier to fix etc. Wubi is not a long term solution and is very fragile in setup.

That's exactly what I am doing I want to end up with a dual boot machine. My problem is that since wubi doesn't seem to work, where can I find the 12.04.2 Ubuntu kernel to install it? BTW there is no error in Windows log about wubi.

Let me summarize it:

1) I have Intel x64 CPU. Your image is for AMD x64. Is this a problem?
2) Wubi won't even start. Where can I find another Ubuntu 12.04.2 install image, or liveCD to download?

Thanks,
Nikos

I am running AMD 64 hardware and found that 12.04 (I use LTS Ubuntu) was very much easier to install and works great, when I installed the 32 bit version. Yes, I know all sorts comments to be inserted here, but since you want to try, I suggest you try the 32 bit.

An alternative to the dual boot, virtual. I have a windows 64 bit laptop. I installed virtualbox (free from Oracle) and then the 32 bit Ubuntu. It works very well. That way you can play with it without changing during a boot. The full screen mode allows me to run as if I have the complete display making it feel more like the boot OS. Performance is good.

No. I am not looking for a demo. I am a Linux veteran and need a working linux box ASAP. I am only interested in the 64bit version, not the 32 bit. I am only interested in 2 things:

1) I have Intel CPU x64. The Ubuntu image is for AMD x64. Does it matter?
2) Where can i download Ubuntu 12.04.2 64x (LiveCD or install/Kernel)? The main download section in your site offers only wubi - which will not run in my PC, and have anyway heard horror stories about it.

As a 'Linux veteran' you will know that it will work as EVRY Linux distribution uses the same naming convention....hmmm......

The main Ubuntu site does not only offer wubi at all.
http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop

From Ubuntu.com click download at the top then the big orange arrow pointing down for the Down)load page.

I am heavily doubtful of your Linux use claim if you cannot find that and don't know if amd64 will run on a modern 64bit Intel CPU. back in those days the luxuries and support of today was few and far between and a lot of searching was needed to get things working.

No. There are a lot of broken distros out there. In fact I just tried opensuse 12.2 and left in a hurry. Hoping for a much better and polished "distro".

Come on! That's where I downloaded the wubi iso! There is nothing else but wubi over there! Are you telling me that there is no LiveCD or an installer running on linux kernel?

Maybe I am more of a veteran than you. At least I downloaded the iso before making bold statements. You should try it, too. ;-) Back in those days we would compile the kernel specifically for the environment used, specifically choosing each driver/compile flags. Lilo uses Assembly. Now, AMD64 assembly has a few differences from Intel 64. I just hope it runs clean. I don't take it for granted.

Try there, remember to MD5 test the ISO you download

Help! There is a wubi infection running amock through all your images! Kidding aside, this is the exact same iso offered in your download page. I just had to download it twice to find out. ;-)

> Try there, remember to MD5 test the ISO you download
MD5 test is for Rookies. I know better....

Anyway, I trust your site, TCP/IP is a reliable protocol, and my CDBurning tool verified the iso transfer. No need to overkill. You might be interested to know that your iso image is by 10MB larger than a 700 MB CD. I had to overburn it to make it work. I even started writing a message, that I was going ahead with Debian, but then I thought to myself: I have already wasted a CD, and I admire your persistance and desire to help, so I thought what the heck...wubi or no wubi, I'll give it a shot.

Now I have a working Ubuntu. Thank you. I just have to customize it and recompile the latest kernel. I see no inittab and that worries me. I am a init 3 guy, not 5! Anyway, I''l figure it out. Got to run those updates, now!

Take care,
Nikos
