Does not install

Asked by Piet

I downloaded the Ubuntu 7.10 for desktop pc image and wrote it to cd. The cd auto runs and shows the Ubuntu logo with "Launching browser, please wait." This dissapears after a couple of seconds and then nothing happens. The cd does not seem to be bootable either.

Your Ubuntu disk may be corrupt or incorrectly burnt in some way. On the menu when you first boot up the CD try 'Check CD for defects' and let us know what result you get.

Thanks.

Thanks David

I don't get a menu. The cd does not boot and when I run the start.exe file it does not bring up a menu. I have also tried installing by mounting the image from my hard drive using nero virtual drive but with the same results. On my friend's pc it also just brings up the logo and then nothing happens. I downloaded the file using download manager and it didn't give me any errors.

It sounds to me like the ISO file or the cd is corrupt or incorrect in some way, especially if it isn't working on both computers you've tried.

We can check the integrity of your ISO file by comparing the MD5 hashes.. then we'll know if it is a problem with the disk or not:

Here are the Ubuntu hashes - https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuHashes

If you've never used MD5 before, then I recommend you check out this Wiki page to help you - https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM

Let me know if you have any problems.

Did you burn CD as a data disc or did you specify Nero to burn the ISO to a disc?

Also it is recommended that you burn the Live CD at a speed of 4x or lower since a speed greater than 4x can cause the Live CD to be corrupted.

I presume he's burned the ISO to the disk, as he is seeing the start.exe file..

Hi guys, thanks for the help. The hashes does not compare. I'm not going to download the file again. It took me most of yesterday and I'm nearing my cap. I did order a cd so I guess I'll have to wait for it.

Thanks
