display seems to be stuck in laptop or low res.. new install

the only choice i have on displays is laptop and it is highlighted,,, i cant change the resolution.. i have an Nvidia card GeForce 5200

I see you have this problem when using the nvidia driver.

Does the same issue occur if you uninstall the nvidia driver and use the nouveau driver instead?

If the nouveau driver does not solve the issue, then I suggest adding the undetected resolutions manually using this procedure:
