Which programm have you used to set the resolution?
What "type" of graphics card do you have?
Could give there your /etc/X11/xorg.conf (part with resolutions /Section "Screen"/ is enough)?

I'm using an intel graphic card on a acer laptop with a plug n play monitor.

kubuntu set it as 1280 x 800
needs to be 1024 x 768
reset itself at 640 x 480 and will not let me correct it. It the same on gomes and kde( ubunta and kubuntu ).

thank you

For Intel cards use package 915resolution (it is repositories - install it, if you don't have it).

Edit file /etc/rc.local (e.g. "gksudo gedit /etc/rc.local" in Gnome or "kdesu kate /etc/rc.local" in KDE) and add this line (it have to be before line with "exit 0"):

915resolution 5c 1920 1200

(instead of 1920 1200 write your resolution).

Resart your PC (maybe restarting X is enough, I'm not sure...) and I hope that all will be OK...
