hard disk space

i am using ubuntu 12.04 32 bit. every week i update packages through update manager, My question is it may take hard disk space or else it replace old one???

sometime upgrade use additional space according to packages upgraded :

but dnt worry it will not exhaust your system HardDisk. Upgrade just upgrade old packages :)
