top menu bar blank and noting happens when i click icons on left side of screen

Asked by errcyco

I installed 12.04 32 bit on a dell laptop with amd/ati.. it couldnt find this wireless card so i plugged in into my router. it did a ton of updates and asked to be restarted. now when it loads the top menu bar where my name and power options volume.. ect. is just a solid grey bar and all this icons to the left, do nothing when i click them.

this is a big problem for me as i just wiped out windows 7 from it and as of now have a useless machine.. before i did the updates everything seemed to work besides my wireless card and it wanted to install a ton of drivers, one for my ATI gpu. I tried installing another version 11.10.. booting the .iso disk and it still just goes to the home screen of 12.04 with the same issues

someone please help, the computer is for a family member and i'm completely out of ideas

It's hardly a useless machine. You can still hit the Windows key on your keyboard and run applications. ALT+F2 will probably work too. Am I wrong?

Can you help with this problem?
