synaptic package manager corrupt

Asked by Mason Flake

E: Malformed line 31 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list (dist)
E: The list of sources could not be read.
Go to the repository dialog to correct the problem.
E: Malformed line 31 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list (dist)
E: Unable to lock the list directory

The above appears when I try to use the Synaptic Package Manager. This started after I tried to add a repository.

How can I download and/or reinstall the package? Or is there another solution?

Thanks for your help

Mason Flake

You have to do Alt+F2 then type "gksu gedit /etc/apt/sources.list" and then go on line 31. Finally, correct it or delete it to resolve your problem. Try then (after saving it) to refresh packages list in Synaptic to see if it works. Don't forget to close your support request as "answered" if you problem is solved. Hope that it helps you.

Nicolas,
Thanks a million; I am a newbie and have a lot to learn. I corrected the
problem as you directed, I do not understand what constitutes a line
number, but finally figured out the problem and corrected it. I will
close the support request.

Again, thanks a million

For your "apt repos culture", a source line is made of that :

"Packet type" "Repository address" "Distribution version" "Parts of the repository"

"Packet type" may be "deb" for pre compiled binaries, or "deb-src" for sources.

"Repository address" may be for example "http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu"

"Distribution version" may be "Dapper" or "Edgy" for example.

"Parts of the repository" may be "Main", "Restricted", "Multiverse" or "Universe" (for ubuntu) or the 4 together on the same source line.

Happy to help you :)
