Hi ,
please follow this procedure
https:/
Copy-Paste the long command in your terminal and post back here FULL results.
BE aware you must turn your terminal to Unlimited Scrolling . Edit > Profile Preferences > Scrolling > and tick the Unlimited box.
Also I saw unsupported kernels in your system .. 3.7.1 .. etc .
Please as we debug the problem boot from an Official Ubuntu kernel such as : 3.2.0-38-generic
Thank you.

Nick,
I tried out the 3.7.1 kernel one time. It failed miserably, so I dropped back to the supported kernels and haven't been back once. Is there a way to remove that completely from my system? I didn't know it was still there.
I'm going through the procedure you directed me towards and I'll post the results momentarily.

Try these commands
sudo apt-get purge bcmwl-kernel-source
sudo apt-get install --reinstall linux-headers$
sudo service ufw stop
sudo apt-get install bcmwl-kernel-source
sudo modprobe wl
Wait 5 secs and see if wireless works.
The problem here might be a mis-configuration of UFW.
Thank you.

I seem to recall there USED to be an "eth0" result that indicated the wireless connection... it's gone MIA.

I would suggest to boot from an older kernel and test the same commands ...
Do not remove all older kernels yet.
sudo apt-get purge bcmwl-kernel-source
sudo apt-get install --reinstall linux-headers$
sudo service ufw stop
sudo apt-get install bcmwl-kernel-source
sudo modprobe wl
It seems like the headers of the 3.2-0-38-generic are not good enough to handle the module.
If I were you , I would remove the newer kernel 3.2-0.38 and test again .. from an older kernel.
Thank you.

Nick, I do have a question: I'm still a bit of a Linux/Ubuntu n00b, and I don't know HOW to boot from one of those older kernels...?

You can choose from grub menu (bootloader).
Goto "Previous Linux Versions" and boot from an older kernel. eg: linux-image-
and see if WiFi works there.
You can try the commands from answer #19 also.
Thanks

Since this system only has Ubuntu installed (no other OS), I never see a grub menu...
If I remove the current kernel and reboot, would it by default boot from the previous kernel?

hold SHIFT at boot and grub will show

Sorry it took me so long to respond. I've tried holding down the left shift key, the right shift key, and BOTH shift keys... no grub menu.
I wait till the BIOS boot up screen appears (which is BEFORE the hard drive is accessed) and then hold down the key and I continue holding it up until the Ubuntu login screen appears. I NEVER see the grub menu.
When am I SUPPOSED to press the shift key? Is there another trick to getting that menu to appear at boot??

I don't know any other "trick". Although when you have multiple kernels the "hold down shift key" is not needed.
Normally the grub menu should appear by itself.

Since the "Shift Key" trick isn't working for me, can anyone suggest changes to /etc/default/grub that might have the same effect?

you can edit /etc/default/grub and change the:
default=
line. You will need to run:
sudo update-grub
to apply the change

So apparently, despite having a bunch of different kernels in my system, they don't appear in this file at all.

Just discovered that if I change this line:
GRUB_TIMEOUT=10
to
GRUB_TIMEOUT=-1
I get the grub menu at boot. I tried using the oldest kernel first... but I had NO networking (wired or wireless). I wasn't able to get the wired networking to work either. Just booted back to the newest kernel and I'll try the rest in succession to see what happens.

Latest update: I have both wireless and wired connectivity on the 3.2.0-32 kernel. Now... how do I upgrade to the latest supported level of the kernel without losing one or the other??

Hi Jaime Cruz,
the latest stable kernel for Ubuntu 12.04 is 3.5.0-xx . You have to know that Kernel (and other stuff) are being backported from Ubuntu 12.10 (Quantal) to the LTS (12.04) version.
Install and try the latest version , I hope it works.
sudo apt-get install linux-image-
sudo apt-get install linux-headers-
IF everything goes OK , and you have wireless and wired ON , you can remove ALL the kernels of 3.2 series.
Thank you.

Wow, what a long strange trip it's been. I wasn't able to use the 3.5 kernel. Although I had wireless, I didn't have the necessary Atheros driver for my wired connection that was compatible with the 3.5 kernel, so I didn't have my wired connectivity. Worse, it broke my copy of VirtualBox, which is also apparently not compatible with 3.5... but you guys gave me an idea.
I booted back to the 3.2.0-32 kernel, then removed the 3.2.0-38 kernel I had installed. Then I reinstalled the 3.2.0-38 kernel and header files and booted back. Voila!! Both wired AND wireless connectivity were available!
I just wanted to thank NikTh and actionparsnip for their patient guidance and assistance through this.
OH! One more thing, NikTh:
One of the commands you gave me to run was:
sudo apt-get install --reinstall linux-headers$
That is a typo. I figured out what it is SUPPOSED to be is:
sudo apt-get install --reinstall linux-headers-
Once I inserted the hyphen between "linux-headers" and "$(uname -r)" the command worked.
Thanks again!

I have a very similar problem, and I have much easier steps to produce the bug.
I now need help
a) getting apt-get working after it became trashed following ubuntu docs
b) getting my wifi working, without trashing anything else
Here the document to show my similar issue
