Ubuntu - Virtualisation

Asked by sisiferl

I have ubuntu 7.04 already installed and would like to virtualise it on Windows XP with VmWare, Virtual Box or another VC-program.
I've installed VmWare already, but it does only see an ubuntu ISO-file and not my already installed OS.
Can someone help me?

Virtualbox 1.4 and up allows you to virtualize an already exisiting hard disk as a "virtual disk." After installing, check out the section in the User Manual entitled "9.9 Using a raw host hard disk from a guest." I was able to virtualize my XP partition on Ubuntu 7.10 with this. It works the other way too, so you should have no problems.

Hi,
Thank you so much for the answers. I tried it on WinXP according to the text on the User's Manual file, but still doesn't work. I've created the new .vdi and it says to create a .vmdk and type \\.\Partition0, having WinXP as a host. But where?

"it does only see an ubuntu ISO-file and not my already installed OS" can you be a bit more clear? I mean what do you mean by not already installed OS is it that it is not identifying you previous vDisks or ...... what?

I have two partitions on my HD, one with WinXP and the other one with Ubuntu7.04. I am doing some simulations on a tool, which does only work on Linux and work with other files, mostly at the same time, on WinXP. Now I am trying to get this already installed/working Ubuntu virtualized under my WinXP. Chris said above about the User's Manual of VirtualBox and I didn't get it yet. Sorry, but it's a new topic for me. If anyone could help, it would be fine.
