recovery mode not working

I try starting my computer in recovery mode but im am unable to enter recovery mode when i startup my computer. Holding shift does not open the grub menu and the computer proceeds to the login screen. i am using ubuntu 12.10.

If the Escape Key does not work, you can boot the Ubuntu Live CD/Installation CD to go in Recovery Mode.

Recovery mode will not work properly for me either.
I cannot boot from the installation CD at all.

Can you help with this problem?
