Successful Ubuntu LAMP 12.04 instal Need Desktop

Asked by Augustus

Hello all,

I'm new to Linux environment and only today successful installed Ubuntu LAMP 12.04 in client Hyper-V. I now wish to acquire Ubuntu Desktop 12.4. How do I install/configure LAMP to recognize the Ubuntu Desktop? I know it works the other way around - Ubuntu desktop installed first then LAMP. I need step-by-step instructions or need to be pointed in the right direction. Thanks!

If you wanted a desktop OS. Wht install the server OS? The server installation is designed to boot faster, be more secure and use fewer resources. Thhere is no restrictions on the desktop install and you can install serverlike services on the desktop with no ill effects.

If you want a desktop. You can install the xubuntu-desktop package for a light desktop.

In future, I suggest you install the desktop OS then add what you need

Thank you for you marks. Perhaps, I should have stated my objectives...

I'm having a demo website created for presentation purposes. The site, in demo form, would NOT go live until after my presentations have run its course; and moreover, I'm not the one who would manage nor further develop the site. The demo site would have a database, the look-and-feel of a website, and an API interface with LinkedIn. Said features would each be developed not by me - I would only use the features for demo purposes. By the way... the demo site is will be used in the planning phase of an altruistic foundation. Which is more appropriate for my purpose: Ubuntu LAMP server 12.04 or a Ubuntu desktop with the necessary (LAMP) applications installed? Thanks for the advice!

Hi,

If you are an experienced user with terminal , then Ubuntu Server installation is the appropriate.

But most of users prefer the Ubuntu Desktop installation .

So my advice would be to install Ubuntu Desktop , then install LAMP and then MAYBE (I'm not sure about that) you can copy-paste (or move) your current LAMP configuration to the newest installed LAMP in Ubuntu.

Then you will be able to manage your demo site from Within Ubuntu with a desktop - GUI .. etc.

Of course for such proposes always is preferable an LTS (Long Term Support) release , so download and install Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS

Thank you.
