making the final move from w7!

Asked by david

Hi,
Ok I first had Wubi - & a lot of fun - then I installed 12-4 as an "alongside dual boot with w7". I'm now ready to have Ubuntu as my 1 & only OS. Yes, I've read all the comments about how it's advised to keep windows "just in case" but I've really had enough of it & there's nothing there that I can't adequately accomplish with Ubuntu!!!
Now, I need to know how to make this final switch as smoothly as possible & without losing TOOOOO much of my customisation. I don't know so much about partitioning so if advice could be given in the simplest terms, that'd be nice :)
Also....I've made a backup to an external drive of just about all the data that's important to me but, I must ask: How much is actually lost during this process? And is it in fact easier to copy files from w7 to Ubuntu first?
thanks to all for any advice,
david

As long as you have a backup you can go nuts :). I suggest making a 15Gb partition for /, 1.1xRAM for swap (I assume more than 2Gb RAM) and the rest as /home

This gives a great backup possibillity and keeps your user data separate from the OS files.

Can you help with this problem?
