Unmountable Boot Volume

Asked by PETE JONES

Hi I got the umnountable boot volume on my laptop and it won't boot up which led me here. I didn't backup my files and need to get them backed up. I called best buy geek squad they said it would be over $100 to fix which led me to searching for other ways to fix it myself. How hard is the process of recovering my data using unbuntu for a newbie? Should I let best buy do it? I downloaded unbuntu's latest version and went to burn it to a cd but unbuntu is 734mb ND THE CD ONLY HOLDS 700MB'S what is the problem here?

Yup, most of the standard Ubuntu isos are too big for a CD. Use a DVD, or a USB to create a boot media. Or track down the mini.iso at the Ubuntu site, which is MUCH smaller, and will easily fit on a CD.

If you want to use a CD , try Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS , it will fit
http://releases.ubuntu.com/precise/

After you burn the CD (ALWAYS in slowest speed) you must boot from it , and click "Try Ubuntu" . After you reach the Desktop Environment you should open nautilus file manager and try to track your files.

After you track your files try to copy them to an external HDD or somewhere else.

That's it.

Problem it might occurs is with permissions of copy-paste. There you should open nautilus as root .
How to open nautilus as root ?
Open a terminal (CTRL+ALT+T) and apply the command below

gksudo nautilus

again search and find your files and then copy-pate them to a safe place.

Hope this helps you to "run away" from 100$

Thanks

Houston, we have a units mismatch (Mars lander crashes in background). Unfortunately, the 700M reported on the download page mentioned is 700 x 2**20, not 700 x 10**3, and that comes out to about 729MB for the units CDs use. Try the below link for minimal isos:

Can you help with this problem?
