Install goes to command prompt

Asked by Curlews

When I try to install Ubuntu the following happens. Loads Linux kernel then goes to blank screen then displays -

BusyBox v1.1.3 (Debian 1:1.1.3-5ubuntu7) Built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.

(Inframfs) -[blinking cursor]

The machine is an old laptop that has been succesfully running Windows XP Pro. 600mhz cpu, 192 MB RAM, 6Gb drive.

Any ideas? Anyone?

Your 192 mb of ram are under the 256 MB required by Ubuntu 7.10 i suggest you to install:
Xubuntu http://www.xubuntu.org/ it require less ram to run...

By the way

Please make some common check using first boot menu Ubuntu live cd options...
This: http://i18.tinypic.com/6tzzndc.jpg
Try to perform the "Memory test" and the "Check cd for defects"

If you are still in trouble... please reboot your pc and starting with Ubuntu live cd please try to put some common Ubuntu kernel live cd options you can find the boot options howto here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootOptions
First parameter you can try by put them one by one or together are:
noacpi nolapic nodma all_generic_ide

If this don't work i suggest you to download and burn on a cd at lower speed you can do (4x)
here an howto https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto
the Ubuntu alternate install cd iso image ( ubuntu-7.10-alternate-i386.iso ) you can download this cd from here: http://releases.ubuntu.com/7.10/

Hope this helps
