Before you format the drive:

1) Backup ALL essential data you don't want to lose.
2) Be very sure you want to format the drive. Formatting erases *everything* on the drive.
3) Make sure you can't just remove the game easily. Usually a "sudo apt-get remove game-name-here" will do it.

Once you are sure, simply load the Desktop CD and open the installer. When it asks you how you want to install it, just pick use/erase entire disk. It will be formatted when it starts installing.

Hope that's what you were looking for!

I am facing a similar issue, but I want to format the hd in order to install winxp and then ubuntu. i tried many ways to install winxp and all i get is the blue screen :-P with STOP: 0x0000007b (0xf7802524, 0x60000034 ... ...) i think i have none partition for fat32 or similar despite my humble novice attempts to make some fat32 partition when installing ubuntu (no problems at all installing ubuntu)

Disco /dev/sda: 320.1 GB, 320072933376 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 38913 cylinders
Unidades = cilindros de 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

/dev/sda1 * 1 2440 19599268+ b W95 FAT32
/dev/sda2 2441 26755 195310237+ 5 Estendida
/dev/sda3 26756 32802 48572527+ c W95 FAT32 (LBA)
/dev/sda5 2441 26755 195310206 83 Linux

so i think will b easier just to plain format the hd and then try install winxp and then ubuntu 9.10
Can I use the GParted to format from a memo card or the ubuntu cd and how to do it in both cases, or maybe someone can just explain bit a bit how I partition the disk when I install ubuntu so the hd will accept the winxp loader/install, thanks again.
