Harddisk keeps spinning

When I wake up my laptop from suspend mode, for a long time harddisk keeps spinning. Almost for 30 to 45 minutes. I am using Ubuntu 32 bit version 11.10 on IBM T42. During this period I am unable to use the laptop. I can not click on any icon or launch browser. Ubuntu is uptodate.
