startup entry deleted but returns on reboot

Asked by Ron O

Trying to get Evolution Calendar Alarm to work, I entered the following from an online posting into System-Preferences-Sessions-Startup Programs: /usr/bin/evolution -c calendar. All this did was to cause Evolution to open after each reboot, whether there was a scheduled event for that day or not.
I removed the entry from the same interface, but Evolution still starts at each startup. If I look at System-Administration-System Monitor-Processes Tab, I can see the process listed, and stopping it there has no effect. It keeps coming back after each restart. So it looks like you can enter a command into Startup and not be able to get it out. How do I get this out of Startup?

I'll work on getting Alarms Notification to work after I stop Evolution from starting ALL the time. Some of the online info indicates that this bug (failure to notify of an appointment) goes back at least 2 releases. Since this is one of the more important services a computer can provide (scheduling), I wonder why this has not been resolved by now. I am a new to Linux, but I hope it is not going to be Windows all over again. Is there another distribution that is less bloated than Ubuntu I should consider?

Go to System > Administration > Sessions and look for something there related to Evolution. Uncheck it and log out and back in again to see if it opens. If you still can't get it to stop, run the command below, paste the results here, and I'll see if I can help you out more.

ls ~/.config/autostart

I already tried unchecking it, then I removed it completely from startup, so there is nothing to uncheck. usr/bin/evolution -c calendar keeps showing up in Current Session.

ls ~/.config/autostart just returns my original prompt with no response. I preceded it with sudo and got the same.

I also looked in the /etc/init.d directory for a recent entry and there was nothing.

Hmm, that's weird, that autostart folder normally has things in it.

Another possible problem is GNOME session saving. Go back to System > Preferences > Session; Session Options tab. Make sure "Automatically remember currently running applications when logging out" is unchecked, and close *every* application except for the Sessions dialog. Even things sitting in the tray should be closed if they are not normally there. Then, hit "Remember currently running applications." Sign out and back in again to see if the problem persists.

It is unchecked. When you say to close everything, do you mean in Current Sessions and do you mean to use the Remove button? (there is no Close) Or do you mean in the Startup tab? The options there are Close, Remove, or uncheck.

Sorry for the ambiguity; I mean close all other open applications. If they are left open when you hit Remember, GNOME will try to start them on your next login (and beyond).

Problem persists. I even tried restoring a full backup to no avail. A week ago, I installed Thunar file manager (from xubuntu) and set it up as the default instead of Nautilus. I wonder if that broke some sort of association elsewhere in Ubuntu. This installation is only a few weeks old, so I do not have a lot invested in it, and I really am not confident with it. I may just do a full reinstall. What do you think? Thanks for trying.

A second installation had similar issues around session manager.

I loaded a fresh install of Xubuntu and, so far I find that generally applets are working better AND faster.
