MS Office Installation Problem in Ubuntu 12.10 Using Wine

Asked by Mahmudul Haque

I try to install MS office 2013 in Ubuntu 12.10 using Wine. But It says:
error: newer windows version needed.

Then I open Configure Wine, change Windows Version to Windows 7 & try to install it again. Another error occurred and I dont it what it's saying.

Unhandled exception: unimplemented function KERNEL32.dll.GetSystemDefaultLocaleName called in 32-bit code (0x7bc49f20).

According to the wine appDB, the attempts to get it installed by other persons also failed, see http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=26323

Wine is not a solution to running windows programs on Linux some programs work well, some with a few problems and some just don't. Take a look here http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&iId=31
Office 2013 is rated as Garbage meaning it wont work acceptably under Wine.

Options now:

1. LibreOffice is installed by default and will read many MS office files -- most people use LibreOffice instead of Microsoft Office.

2. You could have either a separate PC for Windows or dual boot.

3. Virtual Windows. You can install a legal copy of windows in Virtualbox or similar software. Virtualbox is in the software centre. Once inside Windows inside virtual box you can install MS Office.

Note: both options 2 and 3 require you to have a legal copy of Windows. Software running inside visualisation software runs slower than running natively but I don't think this will be a problem for office.
