Asked by JenL

I have 2 external HD's , that I have info on that I need for use on my Ubuntu systems.

1 is a 1 TB portable hd from seagate its a goflex portable. it has tax info and fotos, movies, pix u name it its on it. its a NTFS file system . I want to use it on my Ubuntu system but I cant for any reason lose any info. So what is the best way to get it to work on 12.04 lts

The Second drive is basically the same but its a goflex desk hd 2 TB and it has 1.64TB of info on it. I also need it to work with my XP system and my Ubuntu system with out losing info off it.

Any suggestions would help . Also I just started using Ubuntu today and i'm still setting up stuff. SO i'm managing to figure some stuff out but not all yet . Google search is my bestfriend right now.

Thanks for the help all

If I were you I would back up all your data off the first HD, and use gparted with Ubuntu to format it to an ext3 or ext4 filesystem, then put all of your data back on it. That is if you are only using it for Ubuntu. But since you need to use the second one with XP and Ubuntu anyway, then you should install ntfs-config.

In terminal:

sudo apt-get install ntfs-config

then:

sudo mkdir -p /etc/hal/fdi/policy

Then search for the program from Dash or open in terminal:

sudo ntfs-config

And that should allow to to mount your drives with read/write permissions

Neither of above is needed in Ubuntu nowadays.

ntfs-3g is pre-installed in Ubuntu and you will have NO problem to mount and manage your external HDDs from Ubuntu installation.

Leave them as it is , so you can mange them from XP and Ubuntu . The only thing you have to careful about , is the "SAFE REMOVAL". This is some kind of important because if a file stays open in XP , Ubuntu will not be able to open this file properly and vice versa.

So USE ALWAYS the "safe removal" option either from XP or Ubuntu.

I have to external HDDs , (western digital) 500GB and 1TB , never had any problem with Ubuntu and never needed to install any additional program.

Thanks

If the data is important to you then you will have made a duplicate copy to another storage. This is called a backup and insures data integrity
