Opera Wont Play YouTube Clips - Flash Player Problem

Asked by taurus

Guy!!! Opera will not play YouTube clips. When I go YouTube.com and click on a clip, I get a message saying that I need to install Macromedia Flash Plugin. I did download and install it, but the problem is still there. I love Opera and dont want to use another browser. Any suggestions, guys?

The plugin you installed was probably not the "packaged" plugin that is used. To install the Flash plugin system-wide, install the package flashplugin-nonfree from Synaptic, or in Add/Remove search for Flash.

Hey, Jacob - i looked in the synaptics manager and add/remove programs search and couldn't find 'flashplugin-nonfree'. It's just not in there. What do you suggest I do now? Please let me know because I hate using any other browser... i love opera. thanks.

In Synaptic, go to Settings > Repositories. Make sure all five checkboxes are checked on that dialog, and then close it. Click Reload on the top left of Synaptic, and wait a few minutes to refresh the download information. After that finishes, search for flashplugin-nonfree again and it should be available for installation.

Hi, Jacob... I did what you asked, and had installed the flashplayer in the manner you'd described. However, when I go to YouTube, I'm still unable to view clips... the problem is still present. However, instead of seeing a message on YouTube that says, 'you need to upgrade your flash player', I see a greyed-out box in place of where the clip is supposed to be played, but still no clip. At least it's a step in the right direction.

I was wondering maybe if I where to change the path in Opera where the flashplayer is located, maybe that can help. I know I messed around with that part of Opera and I did add 2 additional paths to the flashplayers before you mentioned your help concerning install of the flashplayer. So now, I have 3 paths in total. What should be the correct paths?

Do you think that at this point I should uninstall Opera altogehter and reinstall it? I tried doing that, but Opera will not completely uninstall. You're my only hope, Jacob. I thank you for your help, but I'm desperate for an answer. Thanks !!!

Hello again taurus,

Could you run Opera in a terminal, visit YouTube or a site with Flash, and paste the results here? It could be related to a bug in the player itself:

Hi, jacob... being a newbie to ubuntu, what are the steps to run Opera in terminal? what's the command line to run that in terminal?

Sorry for the late response; to run Opera in a terminal just type "opera" and hit enter (no quotes).

I'm not entirely sure, but it looks like Flash cannot access the sound device judging by those two errors. Could you try visiting YouTube in Firefox just to see if it works? If it doesn't, we might have an entirely different problem on our hands.

hi, jacob... yes, i was able to play clips on youtube using FireFox. and what you said about flash not accessing the sound device, all i can say is that i have no sound on my computer - (i think ubuntu doesnt recognize the integrated sound in my motherboard). this is a separate issue i will tackle later on. for now, im dealing with my opera issue. but do you think that this has anything to do with the sound device? fireox was able to play clips on youtube given that i have no sound recognized by ubuntu on my computer.

jacob, i really need your help man... need your helping hand in this.

Jacob, just to let you know, I had uninstalled the various opera files through the sudo command. I then went and reinstalled it through synaptics. It still doesn't work. I'm at my wits end here. If I don't find a fix for this, I'm afraid that I'll have to admit victory for microsoft by going back to windows xp. I'll give this one more try... any suggestions at this point, jacob?

To be honest I'm not sure where to go from here. It could simply be a bug in the player that can't be fixed until Adobe releases a new update. Does anyone else have any suggestions?

You will need to update to Opera 9.50 Beta 2 or later and then install a fixed Adobe flash package from here:

Hey taurus, I'm having the same problem with opera as well but as an ubuntu newb myself I can't really help with that. With regards to your sound though, I had a problem with certain programs in ubuntu not giving me sound. I'm using xmms for music and VLC for vid's, both give you the option of manually selecting your sound card in the settings page. I wasn't getting sound through them when it was set to default but choosing my onboard soundcard from the drop down list it worked fine. Sorry if this sounds a bit obvious but when using other linux distros and windows the default setting always picks up the sound card so it's easy to overlook.
As you I am getting flash video in firefox just without sound. There doesn't seem to be any way to manually select which soundcard to use when viewing flash over the net so I think this is the problem, even though I've got it selected in the OS's settings.

Hope this helps with your sound problems.

Ben

Ben Sykes, thanks for the tip. However, I'm probably just as much of a newbie as you are. How do I choose my onboard sound card from what drop-down list? Just to let you know, I'm running 7.10 on a Gateway laptop. Please, let me know to get the sound. Appreciate it greatly! Thank you!

As regards VLC and xmms I can tell you what I did and hope it helps. I now have audio playing inside firefox and I'm not too sure how it happened. All I can suggest is spend an evening trawling through the forums and install any packages that are suggested. That's what I did and it seems to be working now.
You can select the sound card in VLC by navigating to Settings/Preferences/Audio/Output Modules/ALSA Once in this section I clicked the refresh list button and highlighted each option in the drop down menu until one worked.
For XMMS - Options/Preferences and at the botton of the Audio I/0 Plugins is a section called Output plugin. I again chose ALSA in the drop down menu then clicked the configure button. Make sure the selected audio card is correct and choose the same audio device that worked in VLC.
Like I said, this seemed to work for me but I don't have the knowledge to suggest it will work for you and while it's allowed me to get sound I feel that there must be a better way to do it. Anyway, hope it helps.

Yeah, they're programs (XMMS). If you've managed to solve the problem in the title then I suggest you open a new thread. It might be a problem with drivers but I can't really help you with that.

Good Luck

Installing Opera 9.50b worked for me.

I just visited this page, downloaded and ran the file to install:
http://www.opera.com/download/?ver=9.50b

The YouTube-videos worked after I restarted Opera.

To the honorable Jo Inge Arnes. THANK YOU!!!
I spent 4 hours this morning trying all the different methods of removing/reinstalling/removing/updating/installing, all failed. Until your suggestion to just install Opera 9.5 and then whammo! It works! I just went to http://www.opera.com/download/?ver=9.50b and installed it through the gui as you stated.
Thanks again.

I also had the same problem with both Firefox and Opera, but none of the suggestions given worked for me. Note even upgrading Opera to 9.5.
Here's how I fixed it:

1. Go to www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/
2. Click on the "Download now" button.
3. Select the version: .tar.gz for Linux.
4. Select "Agree and install now".
5. Save to disc.
6. Open a File Browser and navigate to the download location.
7. Double-click on the file: install_flash_player_9_linux.tar.gz
8. Extract the data.
9. Open a terminal and cd to the extracted directory.
10. Enter: ./flashplayer-install

Then restart Opera (or Firefox) and youtube should now be working.

Of yes - forgot a couple of small but important points:

The flash plugin must be installed in /usr/lib/opera and/or /usr/lib/firefox during the installation process.
You must use sudo to run the installer.

Can you help with this problem?
