Unable to sign in with Root & Menu Options + Command line missing in Terminal

Asked by Ursula Bianchina

I have upgraded to version 12.04 and experience the following problems:

1. I can no longer login with my root username. The system just hangs. Yet, if I login with another profile with less permissions and access Webmin, I can still login with my same root username and password. I also have a mapped drive from another computer using these login details, and I still connect here without a problem.

2. On my home screen, the main menu options are not visible until I mouse-over them. This isn't a train smash but seems to tie in somehow.

3. If I open terminal under any profile, there is no command line.

Should I still be using Gnome?

Kind regards,
Ursula

Root login is not advised nor required

Webmin is not compliant with Ubuntu / Debian and is probably the cause of your issues. You should use ebox. Webmin is probably the cause of your issues as it garbages your config files.

Ubuntu 12.04 uses Gnome by default, only the default shell has changed from gnome-panel to Unity

Thank You for your reply, I am completely new to Ubuntu and Linux in general and I have tried to figure out everything as I go on my own, but this had me stumped.

A developer friend installed Ubuntu on my media server and I am still adjusting, previously being a Mac and Windows user only.

I will stop logging on with my root profile if it is not necessary. I just don't understand why I could do so and it's now stopped working?

Should I install ebox & unity? Will unity fix the display of my main menu options?

What about the missing command line within Terminal?

If Webmin has messed up my config files, how can I fix them?

I really do appreciate your feedback and assistance.

I know that it's not fun helping idiots like me.

Kind regards,
Ursula

I suggest you install the xfce4 package and use that. It is much lighter and faster than Gnome.

Can you help with this problem?
