When does Inkscape 0.48.4 arrive in the Ubuntu Software Centre?

Asked by niyam bhushan

not sure whether i should ask this in the ubuntu forum or inkscape's but am asking here since it's related to the software centre. Inkscape 0.48.3.1 was announced 22 Dec 2012, I'd assume it would hit the Ubuntu Software Centre immediately, or get updated via the system updates notifications, but nothing's happened so far. when will it be expected please? thanks

regards
niyam

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+ppas?name_filter=inkscape

Try one of those PPAs. Be sure to check support for your release

Ubuntu is not a rolling release so it may not appear in the software centre until the next release of Ubuntu.

The only exception to this is if its a bug-fix or security patch.

If it is you can submit a bug report. Provide as much detail has possible

see here for procedure
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs

If not it may exist in an external ppa. ActionParsnip has provided a link in the last post on how to check

Ubuntu is not a rolling release. Almost all programs that were delivered with an Ubuntu release will stay on that version for that specific Ubuntu release.
Higher program versions will be delivered only with newer Ubuntu Releases.

On https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/inkscape you can see, that for Raring Ringtail (Ubuntu 13.04, due in April) the Inkscape version to be delivered most probably will be 0.48.4

An upgrade of Inkscape for the older Ubuntu releases (quantal, precise, ...) is done only in specific cases (important security issues solved, etc.).

If you want to have a newer version on your current Ubuntu release (you did not tell which one you are currently running), you might find it in the backports bucket, or you can look for a PPA (as suggested by actionparsnip), or you can try installing the program version for a higher Ubuntu release (this might work well, but might also fail miserably due to unresolved dependencies), or you even might try compiling the package yoiurself.

Thanks. I guess I'd rather stick to a stable, working version on a stable version of Ubuntu rather than throw the bezier out with the bathwater.
