Screen Won't Turn Off or Dim or Lock 12.10

Asked by Adam Cajander

The Brightness and Lock settings won't work. I have it set to blank after 2 minutes. It only goes blank when the AC is plugged in, which is the exact opposite of what I want. I have gnome-screensaver installed and that doesn't work either. I'm not sure if the Brightness and Lock settings and gnome-screensaver are dependent on each other or not, but neither of them work. Please help me get the screen to go blank after x minutes and to get the "dim to save power" function working.

Thanks

Try to reinstall laptop mode tools ..

From terminal (CTRL+ALT+T)

sudo apt-get install --reinstall laptop-mode-tools

For the dim , I don't know if will work.

Thanks

laptop-mode-tools didn't come with my install, and is not currently installed.. I will try installing it. Could you answer me if it is safe to use though? I heard that it can destroy hard drives from spin cycles or unloading or something like that.

That gave me a slider to manual adjust the brightness --which didn't work. The screen still won't go blank after x minutes, which is my main concern. I just want the screen to go blank after the amount of time I specify.

Thanks

Does the system have a make and model?

In my installation instead of getting dimmer (a little bit), it gets black completely.

@florin I want my screen to go blank after an amount of time that i specify. I'm not as concerned about the dimming feature although it would be nice.

This is a brand new laptop and I get 2 hours battery life tops.

The dimming feature never worked for me , but I didn't search for a solution or workaround because I don't care about dim.

Yes , you heard well about laptop-mode-tools , some people says that a number like 96 or 128 to APM could load and unload and spins down the HDD so many times that can harm it. But this is easy to fix.

Ok , do not install laptop-mode-tools if you don't want , but give some info about graphics.

lspci -nnk | grep -iA2 vga

Thanks

lspci -nnk | grep -iA2 vga:

That was the output, and thanks for your input. I did actually install laptop-mode-tools but it didnt fix my problem.

Lets try to install fglrx (AMD-driver).

sudo apt-get install fglrx fglrx-amdcccle
sudo amdconfig --initial

Reboot your system and see now if the settings applied.

IN A CASE OF A PROBLEM with the reboot (eg : no graphical environment) , you can revert back booting from [Recovery Mode] and after click on ROOT apply the commands below one by one

mount -o rw,remount /
/etc/init.d/dbus start
/etc/init.d/network-manager start

now wait about 10 secs..

and proceed

apt-get purge fglrx* fglrx-amdcccle*
apt-get install --reinstall xserver-xorg-video-ati libgl1-mesa-dri libgl1-mesa-glx
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
reboot

Thanks

You probably don't remember me, here is a question I asked pertaining to this driver...

 https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/219880

here is the bug I am dealing with:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fglrx-installer/+bug/1076298

If you could help me get around this bug, I would be extremely appreciative. It would solve all of my problems with HDMI, screen flickering, probably battery life, VGA, and this screen blanking thing too. I would feel obligated to donate to you if you helped me with this, thats how bad I need it fixed.

Thanks

I cannot fix the bug , I'm not a developer .. and you have right I didn't remember you (I'm answering too many questions every day)..

Lets try a workaround.. a workaround is the only thing I can offer.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:makson96/fglrx
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get install fglrx-legacy

Reboot and see if the problem with fglrx solved.

If not and you still have a problem , you can purge the repo and revert back to your current state with these commands:

sudo apt-get install ppa-purge
sudo ppa-purge ppa:makson96/fglrx
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

You can apply above commands either from console mode (CTRL+ALT+F1) or [Recovery Mode] ..

Thanks

I followed your instructions and after rebooting got to a log screen/terminal. tried startx and received the following error:

fglrx:no matching device section for instance(0something...) found

fatal server error: no screens found.

So I reverted back to the original driver.

I wish there was a fix or some kind of a work around. I just bought this computer and nothing works on it.

Thanks

Then I have not something else to suggest (sorry) , but to install 12.04.1 LTS (more stable as an LTS version and less problems)
OR

wait about 2-3 months for Ubuntu 13.04 to be released.

Thanks

Agreed I am excited about this release. Is it wise to get the beta in march?

Is not wise to get a beta release on your system , generally.

My opinion is people to install a new version AFTER one month from the released day.

Thanks
