Natty is EOL, there are zero packages for it and zero support. I suggest you completely remove Natty and clean install Precise (Ubuntu 12.04). It is LTS and supported until April 2017

Hi Andrew,

Thank you so much for your excellent advice. My only current predictment is that Ubuntu 12.04 works only with wireless-n adapters. I'll try to obtain one to replace the wireless-g one I've been using with Ubuntu 11.04.

The GNU/Linux Terminal is case-sensitive.

The right packagename is ubuntu-restricted-extras with small u , not CAPITAL U.

But please first install Ubuntu 12.04 LTS.

Ubuntu 12.04 LTS works fine with lots of Wireless-G adapters.

After I installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on an HP530 business tabletop at home last year, I found that it would work well only with my IOGear wireless-n but not Linksys wireless-g adapter. This might have been an isolated experience. Since I am getting a wireless-n adapter any time now, I'll wait for its arrival before installing 12.04 LTS on my relative's Windows 7 computer, where I'm trying to install Java. Thank you all for your helpful advice.

I agree with both Mark and ActionParsnip.

There is no problem with Precise and Wireless G. I use it at home with a Linksys router and at work with a Netgear. I have no reason to think there will be a problem with any other model.

The repositories for Natty are not available any more so you need to upgrade.

I also recommend Precise as its supported till April 2017.
