How to get a package version uploaded to a proposed update repository?

Asked by Arnd

I hit a (in my opinion) very serious bug in the lvm2 version in quantal which caused data loss (Bug 1082325).

It already got fixed for the upcoming raring, release. How do we get this fixed into the proposed-updates / updates repository for quantal?

The "Fix Released" is not means that will be fixed in the next distribution release , but at the next release of the package.
So soon will be released a new version of this package with the fixes applied (the patches).

Thanks

Hi NikTh,

in my understanding the fix is already released in a new version of this package
"This bug was fixed in the package lvm2 - 2.02.95-5ubuntu1"

However this new version of this package is not available for quantal (the bug may even be present in precise btw).
In my understanding in general new version of packages are not automatically "backported" for already
released distributions, correct?

So how do we get this bug fixed for quantal? (=uploading the new version of the package to the quantal repositories)
Who is responsible for deciding if a bug is "critical enough"to justify a package upgrade in quantal/precise?

I'm not responsible.. I'm sure :-)

Maintainers - developers and Ubuntu packagers.. are responsible if a package will be backported and when.

And these guys I believe are not reading the answers tracker of Launchpad.. only the bug tracker. So it would be better to do the question there.

Also another option is to get the source code and compile and install this new version by your self .

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lvm2/2.02.95-5ubuntu1

Thanks

What you are looking for is a SRU, see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates for the process to request that this change is made available also for quantal.

There is already a PPA with that fix https://launchpad.net/~arnd-arndnet/+archive/lvm2

Hi Manfred,

thanks, this SRU document is exactly what I was looking for.

Well the PPA you mentioned is mine ;-)

Best regards
Arnd

Happy to hear that I was able to point you to the right document.

Shame on me that I did not look far enough to see that I am referring you to your own PPA. *blush*
