Upgrading to 12.04 from 10.04

Asked by Droeast

I would like to upgrade ubuntu 10.04 to ubuntu 12.04 without having to upgrade ubuntu-desktop with gnome2.
I am used to use it and although I've tried gnome shell and gnome classic, gnome2 is more usefull and Mate is still experimental.
I thank you for your answers.

Gnome2 is dead. Mate is the only unofficial port. If you like the 2 panel session then I recommend you try XFCE. Gnome is not the only desktop

You cannot do that . If you upgrade to 12.04 then the Environment will be upgraded also.

You can use MATE or gnome-session-fallback if you are a fun of gnome 2 .

Also see here an upgrade guide (same things from 10.04 to 12.04)
http://askubuntu.com/questions/203301/how-to-safely-upgrade-from-ubuntu-12-04-to-12-10

The best option for me would be to install Ubuntu 12.04 from scratch. Backup your files and install from scratch. It leasts less , than an upgrade process.

Thanks

Thank you for your answers.
I will try XFCE and gnome-session-fallback and i'll try to configure them as i like, (with desktop effects and panel apps).
