Failure of computer to boot into Ubuntu 12.04

Asked by Rebecca Dittman

Since I installed Ubuntu 12.04 about a month ago running on a 64x Asus P6T SE desktop, I have had problems when booting into the OS. Whilst on most ocassions the boot completes sucessfully, sometimes it hangs with the following (error) message

speech-dispatcher disabled; edit /etc/default/speech-dispatcher
*Starting file alteration monitor FAM
    ...done
saned disabled; edit /etc/default/saned
*Starting web server apache2
apache2: Could not reliably determine the server's ability fully qualified domainname, using 127.0.1.1 for ServerName
*Checking battery state ...

I then have to turn off the machine and try again. Usually this solves the problem and it boots OK, but I am now in this position and have tried to restart a few times without success so have resorted to my laptop to get this off.

The system is up-to-date. Is there any way I can circumvent this during boot? I am a bear of little brain and a newbie to Ubuntu and Linux, so assume I know nothing and make suggestions as simple as posible please. Your attention to this is greatly appreciated as I am desperate to get this machine up and running.

What version of Ubuntu you have installed ? Desktop version or server version ?

Something is not right in the "picture".

You said you are newbie , but the error message reports an.... apache server ... ??

Clarify please.

Thanks

Thanks for your reply NikTh.

OK

Version: Ubuntu 12.10 quantal. Desktop
Kernel: Linux ************* 3.5.0-21-generic #32-Ubuntu SMP Tue Dec 11 18:51:59 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Regarding Apache. Yes I am new to Linux but do have experience with and use PHP for website production, hence installed Apache.

For the record, since I posted this request my desktop has decided to load OS but I suspect that I will come across this problem again as it has happened on several occasions apart from 5 times today.

If you run:

grep `hostname` /etc/hosts

Do you get an output?

Hi. I assume the parenthesis was deliberate but I get

grep: etc/hosts: No such file or directory

You missed the first slash. If you copy and paste the command it'll work

Maybe I did not enter it correctly in terminal before as I have repeated it and get the following

127.0.1.1 MercurialSpirit

What video chip do you use? If you run :

sudo lshw -C display

It will tell you

Thanks

Hi actionparsnip. Cannot give you that info at the moment. Had system running last night but this morning it is again refusing to boot. If I were to use a Live CD are there any options I could use to investigate? I am wondering whether Apache may be causing the problem??? Would I be able to remove this using Live CD?

I have just been looking around for any other solutions to this problem and came across this:

http://askubuntu.com/questions/243690/boot-stuck-on-checking-battery-state-ok

I found that I could login directly when I reached the error as described before using Ctrl-Alt-F2. I did not have to use the sudo mv /var/lib/lightdm/.Xauthority /var/lib/lightdm/.Xauthority-bak command as suggested. Might it help to do so?

I can now tell you the response to your command about video chip was:

PCI (Sysfs)

Try the boot option:

radeon.nomodeset=1

Thanks for that. As I am now successfully logged in and have lots of work to do, I don't want to re-boot at the moment. I will implement this possible fix later and let you know whether it solves the issue.

For me this error happened in Xubuntu 12.10, after I had unchecked the following setting:

'Settings Manager' > 'Session and Startup' > 'Application Autostart' > 'PulseAudio Sound System (Start the PulseAudio Sound System)'

Turning it on stopped the error at boot time.

I had changed these startup settings to speed up my boot time. But unchecking that specific setting caused the "speech-dispatcher disabled" error to occur.

Can you help with this problem?
