Trying to install Ubuntu on an old laptop.

Asked by bluebee

I recently got a rather old laptop from my friend where I want to install ubuntu to get more used to it.
There is still a Windows XP installed on it. Has an Intel pentium III with 850 mhz.
I downloaded the iso and burnt it on a CD, once with 40x speed but when it didn't work I read somewhere here to try to burn it slower so I made another one with 8x, yet still it doesn't work.
I get into the menu, and when I choose the first option (install or start Ubuntu) I first get this kernel bar, then another bar with the ubuntu logo and then a black screen for a while, and then there's white writing on black, and it's a lot of gibberish (in my eyes anyway).
Each line starts with [ 740 000 000] or something similar to that, followed by a lot of stuff that doesn't make sense to me.
says 00000000 00000000 00000000 1000000 etc on another line and at another it goes "Code: 40 00 ... (a lot of 2 digit numbers)"
I can of course provide more info on this if it is needed.
The laptop at this point stops working completely.
Thanks for any help in advance, and sorry for the poor description I hope someone understands my problem.

How much memory does your laptop have?

Have you tried the alternative install cd?

I have an old Gateway model no. MT6707 with 2GB of ram and a 1.6GHz Intel Pentium dual core mobile processor. It has Windows Vista Home Premium OS and I'm trying to do a clean install of Ubuntu on a usb stick. I tried the stick on a newer hp and it boots up ubuntu no problem. When I get to the first ubuntu screen on the Gateway asking me if I want to install
it or try it out, etc., the screen freezes after a few seconds. Any advice?
