Cant find "Desktop Menu" on desktop

What version of Ubuntu you use and what menu you want to access ?

From Ubuntu 11.10 and later you can click the Dash menu (Ubuntu Icon up left on the launcher) and write the name of what you want to access and you will find it.

Thanks for your reply. I've installed Ubuntu Linunx 12.10. Since it did not
access my wireless adapter, a Broadcomm BCM4311, I had to find and use the
bm43 driver. I've got it working now, but don't have the driver permanently
installed. I need to access a system administration function through a
graphical interface which I can't find. I'm supposed to look for "the
desktop menu System > Administration > Hardware/Additional Drivers", but
there is no menu anything like this accessible from the desktop; seems like
some GUI is hidden or missing that should be there.

Click the Ubuntu logo in the top left and search for the word 'driver'

If its nit there then use the cog in the top right and hit system settings

Open software-sources and you will find additional drivers there.

I've gotten the Broadcomm b43 driver working, installing it via modprobe, but I want to do a permanent install so it doesn't go away when I reboot. Many of the Wifidocs pages refer to a "desktop menu" that has system admin selections. Specificially, I'm told that to activate the b43 driver I need to go to "the desktop menu System > Administration > Hardware/Additional Drivers". There is no desktop menu I can find anywhere that looks like this. I can get to an "install option" for network drivers, but it asks for a .inf file. I guess I can download this driver, which is already in the distribution, and unpack a tarball to find an .inf file. But I still would like to be able to do system administration tasks via a logically organized menu hierarchy, vice blindly searching for admin related programs.

You don't need an inf file, the driver is native. You only need inf filesvetc if you are using ndiswrapper, which you don't need

I see. When I started trying to obtain a driver, I modified one of the blacklist files; that may be the source of the problem. Thanks, Andrew and Nick, for your help.
