System restore

Asked by im2tonic

Does anyone know of a way to restore Ubuntu back to a previous date. I accidentally deleted a bunch folders from a USB drive and it seems that simply going forward to the past (back to the future?) might be a easy solution. Thanks for your help ...Fred

Fred,

Did you just delete them by hitting the delete key or did you Shift-Delete them?

If you didn't hold down the shift key, the files may still be on the USB drive in a hidden .Trash folder.

To check, just insert the USB disk. When Nautilus opens the root folder on the disk, Click the View drop down menu and then select Show Hidden Files. You should see a .Trash folder show up. double click on it and, if you are lucky, the files that you deleted will be contained in the folder. Simply copy and past them to the directory where you would like to restore them and you are done.

Jim, nothing in the .Trash folder. Now trying some of the forensic tools suggested here. Go ahead and close out this ticket, and thanks for your help. ...Fred
